"I Am Legend" Could Have Been One of The Best Movies Ever

It's the reason the book was called 'I Am Legend'? The movie draws parallels with the original story in the sense there are vampire like creatures ruling the world who develop mildly human like characteristics as well as societies over time. In the novel however this is pushed further and the vampires reconcile with their human selves albeit maintaining their diseased form. In the movie it was more like 'they're bat shit crazy but now they work as one society of bat shit crazy people and develop emotional bonds with each other'.
The lead character in the novel spends his days finding and killing the vampires as they sleep. He essentially develops a reputation amongst the vampires as a sort of 'boogee man', a legend. This is basically why the title is 'I Am Legend', the lead character is a legend much like the boogee man. In his efforts to kill the monsters he becomes one as the monsters become human.
Now isn't that just a fantastic premise? Why is it the bad guys have to be so black and white evil in the movie? Are Americans that dumb that they dont understand the concept of personality and rather base their entire outlook on life based on somethings looks?
We need a movie where the ugly as monster like creatures are in fact the good guys and the handsome lead character is the bad guy.
