The Simpsons Movie - A Fair Review...?
September 6th 2007 15:13
I honestly did not and could not expect more from the Simpsons movie, right from the start when Homer said it, where all suckers for paying to see something we can watch at home for free. The Simpsons movie is grade A Simpsons humour but with an epic twist that makes it worth sitting your butt in a Cinema to see.
The movie is 'epic' in scope, and rightly so ITS A MOVIE, and like a movie, it has a grander plot than typical Simpsons episodes. It is in many ways more emotional and funnier than the TV series but it will also hurt hardcore fans given it is more akin to a 'Tree House of Horrors' than a regular Simpsons show.
What really gives The SImpsons Movie an edige is the one and a half hour runtime. Characters are explored in depth, you might know Homer, Marge, Lisa, Maggie, Bart and Flanders and here you get to see them fully fleshing out their characters. Homer is stupid and gets his family into trouble because of his stupidity, however, unlike a certain other animated father character, he has a good heart and will do what he thinks is best for his family, even if it doesn't always appear as such.
Marge loves Homer no matter how far Homer pushes it, though as the movie progresses she reaches a critical breaking point with a heart breaking moment where Marge has literally given up hope on Homer.
Lisa is trying to do good, trying to take care of the environment and, above all else, looking for someone like her. She does find a certain someone who will probably be making a regular appearance in the TV series.
Bart is a troublesome boy but only because he's looking for attention from his father. He only gets that attention when doing daredevil type things. After being forced to take a punishment for his actions he looks for another family to join, and a proper father figure.
What is truly remarkable is that a lot of the scenes while giving the entire audience something to get out of. While Simpsons fans can get a lot out of some of the scenes, particularly the canyon jumping scene that reflects on a classic Simpsons episode and to a Simpsons fan can be easily regarded as one of the greatest moments of Cinema history.
There are some minor problems I had with the movie, while I understand and can appreciate the Simpsons series goes on changing realities for laughs (there are about a dozen different and conflicting explanations for Homers stupidity) one moment where the Comic Book Guy claims his life was 'well spent' collecting comics was a bit of a pain. In a Tree House of Horrors he had remarked, moments before death, that he had 'wasted my (his) life' which kind of grew into his character.
When the show explains Homers stupidity it's explaning his character, but the Comic Book Guy character was somewhat clouded and broken up as part of the explanation of his character, that he was wasting his life, knowing it full well but was afraid to confront it, was directly contradicted with what he had to say.
But thats enough Simpsons ranting, fans can get obsessed sometimes, to put bluntly, the movies great. I'd give it 4.5/5 for a Simpsons fan and a 3.5/5 for a non-Simpsons fan.
For all those who want to complain about this review being more about Simpsons characters and the fact I didn't bring up the plot at all, well to put it bluntly, the plotline was second fiddle to the characters. In fact this whole movie was about the characters and not the story. But to make you folks happy.
Homer screws up royally, pollutes the rivers water with pig poo, breaks Marge and Lisas hearts, Lisa because she worked so hard to clean it up, Marge because Homer broke his promise to her. badabingbadaboong their government decides to seal them up, they manage to escape to Alaska, Marge decides to go back and save Springfield when the US government decides to blow it up, Homer doens't want to, Marge goes alone, Homer has a moment of truth, Homer goes and saves Springfield and thats about it.
For those curious, there are a lot of 'moments'. 'Moments' as in those times in the plot where something happens and it seems somewhat irrelevent or isolated or self contained, then alter on turns into a major plot point. It's all very well done and if you're a fan of 'moments' you will appreciate it, even if you absoloutely loath the Simspons.
**LAST PICTURE, SCROLL DOWN, FUNNY JOKE, SLIGHT CHANCE IT'LL GET RUINED IF YOU SEE IT, NO BIGGY**

That Would be Lisa's Love Interest, Don't Bother Trying to Guess His Evil Intensions, This Lad is a Good Person Through and Through

Also, there are some typical moments like Lisa's falling in love, for example, which is another boring and already seen element of this movie.

Daressi, I didn't get the impression it was just a long episode at all. If it wre typical and lacked an epic scope (which this movie clearly had) then I'd agree that it was just a typical episode.
Lisa falling in love is part of her character, I mean, this movie is really a showcase of the Simpsons characters and their development. If Lisa didn't fall in love there would be a missing element.
