Why Everyone Should Eat Halal Meat

May 18th 2007 14:20
'Halal' being an Arabic word used mainly in a controversial religion may end up making it sound like something to keep away from. Though that really isn't the case, it should be something everyone takes into due consideration when looking to eat meat.

Halal meat started around 1400 years ago, at its most basic level it is about Animal rights and healthy eating. If meat is halal it means the animal isn't considered to be a relatively intelligent animal meaning animals such as cats dogs or pigs cannot be halal to eat. It also means that the Animal was not killed in a painful manner and did not live in suffering.

Taken from the Quran,

"Forbidden to you (your food) are: dead meat, blood, the flesh of swine, and that on which hath been invoked the name of other than Allah; that which hath been killed by strangling, or by a violent blow, or by a headlong fall, or by being gored to death; that which hath been (partly) eaten by a wild animal; unless ye are able to slaughter it (in due form); that which is sacrificed on stone (altars); (forbidden) also is the division (of meat) by raffling with arrows: that is impiety."

Besides the invocation of Gods name there isn't anything that would only interest Muslims, it is a very generalized statement of how the animal should be killed and eaten.

I should note the verse above does not make mention of how the meat of carnivorous animals is not allowed to be eaten (with the exception of sea animals). This was mentioned in a Hadeeth to further clarify on the Quranic verses (in particular why pigs cannot be eaten). Other animals that shouldn't be eaten include reptiles and certain rodents (such as rats).

This is more than enough reason in the end for anyone who cares about Animal rights to prefer a restaraunt or bucher with Halal meat instead of one without. While I don't know exactly how the process of declaring meat is halal or not (I think theres a ruling body on the matter) it is certainly safer than buying meat that isn't garanteed to be halal since western countries don't recognize animal rights to the same degree as Islam does.

I looked up this website because we have an Egyptian researcher at our workplace and we wanted to provide some food for her. Earlier this morning we had a discussion about animal ethics (for her research). She said that in Egypt there were no animal ethics committess. In most Western countries there are such committees. I found this strange given your comment
"...since western countries don't recognize animal rights to the same degree as Islam does".
. Would you like to comment on this?

"It also means that the Animal was not killed in a painful manner"
Yes, sure...
Was this 'written' by the same Mo-HAM-HEAD who was a mass murderer, multiple rapist, bigamist with 14 or more 'wives', and a paedophile, who 'married' a NINE YEAR OLD GIRL when he was FIFTY FOUR? You know, the one that muslims call 'the perfect man'?

I guess he was just overflowing with love and kindness as he launched his army of bandits on innocent people and murdered them in their hundreds, then raping the remaining women.

Islam = Fascism
Islam is pure evil.

I take it you haven't read the Koran recently.
